Happy Endings

Dart's Happy Ending
Last April Amy received a phone call from Mike the animal control officer in the city of Lorain. Mike was in a total panic, he didn't know what to do. He received a call from a women who watch a white utility van hit a dog and keep on going. The dog was laying on the side of the road unable to move and screaming in pain. She was just a little yellow puppy about 6 months old. Mike rushed her to the vet office and the vet said that it would cost $400 to fix her assuming it was just a broke leg. If someone doesn't step up to pay for the broken leg she will have to be put to sleep. Of course Amy couldn't let this happen. She sad "I don't care what it costs fix her... oh and what is breed is she?" Mike didn't know.

An hour later Mike called back, the dog warden for the county of Lorain, Mike and the vet determined that her injuries were too bad. She had two broken hips, 4 crushed vertebrae and 3 breaks in one leg. There is no way that she would ever heal and it would cost $2,000 to try to fix her. Reluctantly Amy agreed that putting her to sleep would be the best thing for the poor dog.

1 week later Mike called Amy and said "Do you still want that dog that was hit by a car." Amy said "What dog? I thought you put her to sleep?" Mike explained that the vet decided after hours that he was going to try to save her. The surgery was going to be long and hard and pretty much experimental. The vet left his office that night after the surgery expecting her NOT to making it through the night. To his surprise the little dog was STANDING in her cage wagging her tail and read to go!

The vet said that Amy could take her and all he would charge is $400, although the surgery was really a $1500 surgery. Amy picked up the little girl who turned out to be a 6 month old smooth coat Collie (pure breed)! Amy named her Dart because she darted out in front of a car! At the same time Amy picked up Dart one of her favorite foster homes said they were moving to Las Vegas, NV and that they could foster 1 more dog. Amy had them foster Dart. The foster home fell totally in love with her so once her back legs and back were healed they paid to get her spayed and Amy let them keep her. Dart now lives in Las Vegas, NV and couldn't be happier!

Gracie's Happy Ending
Meet Gracie! Gracie spent the first 4 to 5 years of her life living in a rabbit cage. She was just one of over 100 dogs kept by an Amish puppy miller. Puppy Mills are the worse kind of breeder you can find. They are dirty, over crowded and barely ever have enough food or clean water.

Being a Jack Russell Gracie need human contact and socialization but of course never got it. She was small and cute so the puppy miller used her to have litter after litter after litter until she was near death. That is where Amy and Russell Rescue stepped in.

Gracie was taken from the puppy miller and handed over to Amy. Amy rushed Gracie to the vet where it was discovered that she was pregnant yet AGAIN but this time with a large breed dog. It was hard to tell by the X-Rays but she had a the least 3 babies maybe more. If she was left to have the puppies she would for certain die and so would the puppies. Amy made the hard choice to have the babies aborted.

It was found during surgery that Gracie had 5 babies and many many non cancerous tumors. The tumors were caused from having litter after litter. If the tumors were not removed they would have burst causing internal bleeding and a very painful death for Gracie.

Gracie lived at Amy’s house for 6 months learning basic dog behavior. For example, eating dog food, going outside, barking and playing with toys. Gracie was adopted by a very nice women who is taking the time to let Gracie discover life and learn to trust.
