Weitzel's Greenhouse
In 1952 Richard R. Weitzel Sr. had finished serving in the Army and joined his father in
running a small grocery and flower store on Oberlin Rd. Richard slowly began taking over
the business as his father moved towards retirement.
In 1965 Richard closed the store on Oberlin Rd. and moved to Elyria City (now Value City) on
Oberlin Rd. He expanded when he moved to Elyria City and started carrying wine and beer.
He also had a small popcorn counter inside of the department store.
Richard Sr. then decided that he was going to downsize his business and no longer have a
grocery store. He loved the flower business and wanted to concentrate more on that business.
In late 1980’s he closed his doors at Elyria City and moved the flower business to LaGrange Rd.
where he had his Tack Shop. He was able to have both businesses in one location and was able
to concentrate on the flowers. Shortly after moving to LaGrange Rd he began to take flowers to
Jamie’s Flea Market on RT 113 in South Amherst.
Richard Sr. operated his businesses out of LaGrange Rd until 1999 when he decided to retire.
He built a greenhouse at his farm on West Ridge and currently sells annuals and vegetables
from the farm and you can still find him at Jamie’s Flea Market in Amherst Ohio every Wednesday
and Saturday during the spring.
